Welcome to Sitges!
A charming little beach town about 30 minutes south of Barcelona, Sitges holds a special place in the Chapa family’s hearts since we began visiting over 25 years ago. We can’t wait to share it with you.
Getting there:
Sitges is about a 30-min drive from the Barcelona airport. Uber is now available from the BCN airport as are taxis, but you can also take a bus directly from Terminal 1 relatively easily and get dropped near the center of town. There are also train options from the airport but it’s a bit slower and requires a transfer, so we’d recommend sticking with road-based options personally.
If you’re coming from Barcelona proper, you can drive via the highway, or take the Rodalies de Catalunya (Renfe) R2 Sud train that stops at all of Barca’s major stations (Sants, Placa De Catalunya, Estacion de Franca) directly to the center of town. Either way, you’ll get a lovely view of the Catalunyan coast on the way.
Where to Stay:
Sitges is a vacation town at heart, so there’s no shortage of hotels, condos, apartments, and homes for rent. There are plenty of great sections of town to stay in depending on what you’re looking for, but as a rule thumb, we’d recommend staying within the highlighted area if you want to explore town easily:

Groceries
The center of Sitges is full of small markets selling fresh fruit & veggies, cheese & charcuterie, bread and more. Walking into town and creating a fresh breakfast from visiting these shops is one of our favorite pastimes. However, if you’re looking to do a larger grocery run, here are some options:
Big supermarket next to the train station for all your base needs. Above the basement level supermarket, you’ll find a bunch of market stalls with butchers, cheesemongers, fruit & vegetable stands and everything else you could need.
There are a few of these sprinkled throughout town. Nice, slightly higher-end supermarket with everything you’d need - our go-to store.
High end organic market with all sorts of fancy stuff - if you need oat milk, gluten free products, or other hard-to-find items, this is your best bet.
Dining
Sitges has no shortage of great restaurants, but like any beach town, also has its fair share of tourist traps and mediocre meals. As a rule of thumb, It’s best to avoid the boardwalk restaurants for the most part (we’ll highlight the few exceptions). It’s also generally best to play the hits (Catalan cuisine) or stay within the cuisines of western europe, as the further you stray, the more likely you are to be disappointed.
-
Izarra Tavern / Guria - Great, very local basque-style tapas places with delicious pintxos. Lately we’ve been more partial to Izarra because the atmosphere’s a bit nicer , but both are great and should be tried. (do both in one night even!)
La Masia - The Chapa’s favorite restaurant in town. Great rustic Catalan farmhouse-style cooking with a really good wine list and great service. Make sure to ask to sit in the courtyard. Make sure to order the sausage tree appetizer. Make sure to order a Porrón of liqueur wine and biscotti with dessert.
Al Fresco - High-end but understated spot with an asian-fusion tinge. The food is often good, if not amazing, but it’s set in the open-air courtyard of a gorgeous old building and has a very romantic atmosphere for dinner.
La Oca - A Chapa-family standard. This place is quite literally nothing special, but that is sort of what makes it special. A rotisserie chicken and fries w/ Aioli is the standard order, but you can find other catalan classics throughout the menu. The atmosphere is lively and fun, and great for a big family meal with kids.
Cal Pinxo - If you’re looking to satisfy your cravings for Paella, Fidello, and other spanish seafood standards, this is the place. Great for a long, slightly boozy lunch on the boardwalk.
La Zorra - Renowned Paellas in a lovely beach-side setting. -
La Cocina - Michelin-rated high-concept Catalan fusion cuisine. Inventive and tasty if a bit fussy. The interior is rather forgettable however, so we recommend asking for an outdoor table which is on a cute pedestrian street. Reservations recommended.
Hibou - Natural wines have finally breached Sitges. A delightful new place that opened last year, you’ll find inventive & modern vegetable-forward small plates and a great selection of wines in a cute, intimate space.
Nem - Contemporary leaning tapas & small plates spot with a mix of Catalan and asian influences and a cozy vibe. Kinda feels like you’re eating in a boat. Try the patatas bravas for a great version of a classic Spanish dish. Tough to get a table so make resos or sit at the bar.
Benaprés Beach Bar - A great spot for an unfussy but delicious beach-side lunch. Sometimes a very simple but tasty grilled fish with chimichurri and roasted potato is all you need. You can also rent chairs/umbrellas and order drinks directly to your seats for a posh experience. -
Doner Kebab Sitges - Think of Doner Kebab as Europe’s answer to dollar-slice pizza or the street taco - a delicious and efficient snack good for late nights or quick meals. There is a lot of kebab throughout town of middling quality, but this place north of the train station makes a very solid sandwich while also acting as a social hub for the surly-but-charming old men of the neighborhood.
Smash House Burgers - very solid new burger joint in the center of town that also has chicken nuggets/tenders, cheese fries, and tres leches pudding. Great for a quick post-beach lunch.
Cap De La Vila Pizzeria - Delicious pizza with a great terrace in the main square of town. The Mallorquina (spicy Spanish sausage) is my go-to, but you’ll be in good hands with most of the menu. -
Bloom Coffee - If you’re tired of the standard offerings from the cafes that dot the center of town, you can find more modern third-wave style coffee from this spot just north of the train station. They also carry bags of beans from the esteemed Nomad Coffee Lab in Barcelona in case you prefer to start your mornings at home.
Forn 9 S.L. - One of the simple joys of Sitges is strolling into town for a breakfast of fresh bread and pastries each morning. There are many competent bakeries throughout town, but this is our personal go-to, and the line of old spanish ladies waiting for their baguettes in the morning feels like a validation of our tastes.
Xarcuteria Fontanals - Great cheese and charcuteries in a charming old delicatessen. Grab some sliced chorizo, mortadella, and manchego for a picnic lunch at the beach.
Dino’s - for my money, the best gelato shop in Sitges (although this was a hotly debated topic in the Chapa family). Pistachio flavor is divine imo, and it’s right on the boardwalk and perfect for grabbing on your stroll back home after dinner.
Amati - Puro Gelato - A newer, fancier option for gelato that just opened in town. While I am a Dino’s loyalist and have only tried a few of their flavors to date, the 2-scoop combo of toasted coconut and salted caramel peanuts tastes like a Thai Diner sundae and is worth a visit.
Things To Do:
If you’re bored of town and lounging at the beach, here’s a few quick recos to fill your day:
Golf Club De Terramar
Golf course that sits on the coastline on the southern side of town - about 140 euros for a 18-hole round with a foursome. Tennis courts and Padel are also available.

Wine Tasting
Sitges is near the famed Penedes region, and close to tons of small spanish wineries where you can sample a variety of great spanish wine. One particular one we can recommend is Clos Lentiscus, a vineyard 10 minutes away from the city that’s been active since the 14th century, and is run by a very cool father/daughter duo that specializes in bio-dynamic/natural wines.

Barcelona Day Trip
The trains to Barcelona run every 20/30 minutes and take about thirty five minutes to get to the center of Barcelona. They stop running back from Barcelona between 11 and 12 p.m., so if you want to go out for a late evening, you need to drive in, or take a late bus from Placa Cataluna.
